Abstract

This communication deals with the arrival of African immigrants to São Paulo in the 21st century and their role as cultural mediators between Africa and Brazil. In the 21st century there was an intensification in the migration of people from African nations, mostly black, who differed from the white migratory waves of the 20th century. In our research, we came into contact with many, usually young people, who came from territories that had been colonized by Portugal and France. The interviewed subjects explained during the oral narratives the experienced problems in their displacements and how they had overcome the difficulties. Some of them develop activities in which they discuss questions about Africa: they are cultural mediators, and we strive to know their ways of acting as black activists. We established a dialogic relationship of trust, facilitated by the fact that one of the researchers is also from Africa. Although they do not belong to the same communities, the mediators usually know the carried out activities, it is as if they formed a large mediation network based on common objectives. Several active groups were mentioned: Palancas Negras, Coletivo Raízes, Coletivo Digital, África do Coração. Some work individually, others through a religious institution. Fundamental among all mediators is that the production of knowledge about Africa has native Africans as protagonists. Some aspects were addressed by all: perception of stereotypes and prejudices that are present in Brazilian society about Africa and Africans; insertion of the Africans in Brazil and their difficulties; fight against discrimination and racism; criticism against the vision of Africa as a single country; assistance to those who come from Africa (professional training, work, legal and spiritual assistance); the ways in which they seek to establish exchanges and partnerships with other Africans and  Brazilians; necessity of developing new projects.
