EDITORIAL ANALYSIS PROCESS

In brief, submitted materials will be run through three stages:

  1. Assessment by the Executive Editor – examines compliance with the general scope of the journal, in addition to publication potential in terms of methodology and data. At this stage, the paper may be rejected or forwarded to the Theme Editor for Assessment;
  2. Assessment by the Theme Editor – compatible with the theme of the submitted paper, which is intended to identify the contribution that it makes to its field of specialty, in terms of the relevance and contemporaneity of its bibliography. At this stage, the paper may be rejected or forwarded to the double-blind review process;
  3. Double-Blind Review coordinated by either the Executive Editor or the Theme Editor, this consists of interactions among paper authors and two ad hoc scientific reviewers, who make comments and suggestions. This stage involves ongoing reassessments and resource collection in order to improve the paper.

If approved, the paper is submitted for final editing, with the following stages: layout; grammar and spellcheck; translation into English of papers submitted only in Portuguese; and author assessment.

The RBT journal uses the Open Journal Systems (OJS 3) free open code system for the management and publication of journals, developed with the support of and distributed by the Public Knowledge Project, under a General Public License (GNU). This platform keeps authors advised of each step in the evaluation process and the preparation of the papers for publication.

SUBMISSION STANDARDS

Before submitting a paper to the RBT journal, it is advisable to read this section carefully, in order to ensure that the paper complies with the format presented below. Any submissions not compliant with the formatting rules will be rejected.

Papers may be submitted in Portuguese or English, and must follow the format based on the Microsoft Word 2010 software or later (with .doc or .docx extensions). The file layout must use A4 paper with margins set at 2.5 cms and no page numbers.

The main bodytext, tables and figures must be single-spaced, in 12 pt Arial font, without hyphens. Paragraphs must be separated by a blank line.

Papers must consist of an abstract and keywords in both Portuguese and English, as well as a bibliography in 9 pt Arial font, justified.

Equations/expressions must be centred and numbered sequentially, with the number shown in brackets, justified to the right on the last line of the equation. They should be prepared using the Microsoft Word Equations Editor or inserted as clear figures.

Tables must be included in the main body of the text, centred and using the same font. A centred title must be positioned immediately above each table, identified as “Table X”, where “X” is its sequential identification number, followed by a  dash (“ – “) and the title text. Source citations or explanatory notes must be shown immediately below each table, centred and in 9 pt Arial font. The units of measurement used must be clearly indicated in each table.

Figures and graphic materials must be included in the main bodytext, centred and using the same font. A centred title must be positioned immediately below the figure/graphic material, including “Figure Y”, where “Y” is its sequential identification number, followed by a  dash (“ – “) and the title text. Source citations or explanatory notes must be shown immediately below each table, centred and in 9 pt Arial font. The units of measurement used must be clearly indicated in each table.

A paper may have no more than twenty pages, including the title, the abstract and key-words in Portuguese and English, the tables, figures, graphic materials and bibliography.

The first page must give the title of the paper, centred, in upper case, boldface and double spaced.

Next comes the Portuguese abstract, identified by the word RESUMO, in upper case, boldface, centred two lines below the title. This text (in Portuguese) may not exceed fifteen lines. The abstract must be indicated by the word ABSTRACT, in upper case, boldface, centred two lines below the RESUMO. This text (in English) should not exceed fifteen lines.

The three keywords must be written in lower case, separated by commas and justified to the left. The Portuguese keywords must be preceded by the phrase PALAVRAS-CHAVE, in upper case, boldface, justified left. Two lines below, the keywords must be presented in English under the Keywords heading. The rule for this text is the same as for the Portuguese keywords.

Two lines below comes the bodytext, if there is any space left on the first page. Otherwise, start on the next page. The text should be organized into chapters and sections. The chapters must be numbered, with the title written in upper case and boldface (e.g.: 1. INTRODUCTION). The chapters are subdivided into sections and must be identified by two digits, with the title in lowercase and boldface (e.g.: 4.2. Model validation). Should further subsections be needed, they should be numbered with three digits, with the title written in upper case and no boldface (e.g.: 5.1.2. VARIABLES USED). Two lines must be left blank before each chapter or section title, except at the top of the page. One line must be left blank after each title and between paragraphs.

In the bodytext, the tables and figures, citations to the reference in the bibliography must follow the Brazilian Technical Standards Association (ABNT) standard: author surname(s) and year of publication in brackets, for example, Silva (1997); if the citation is in brackets, the publication year must be separated by a comma, such as (SILVA, 1997). When three or more authors are involved, the surname of the first author is used in the citation, followed by the words et al. in italics, followed by the publication year.

References must be listed in alphabetical order, providing information in the following order: surname, comma and initials of other parts of the name. Authors must be separated by semi-colons. The publication year must be shown in brackets. Should an author have published more than one publication in a specific year, they must be listed with lowercase suffixes: a, b, c etc. The title of the book, monograph, dissertation, thesis etc, must be in boldface. Papers published in journals must be shown with the name of the journal in italics, the volume or number in boldface and the page numbers. For books, the title must be followed by the name of the publisher and place of publication.
