Cidade, indústria e modernidade na representação fotográfica de Hans Günter Flieg (1940-1960)

Abstract

Esta dissertação tem como tema a representação fotográfica da cidade e da indústria pelo fotógrafo alemão naturalizado brasileiro Hans Günter Flieg entre os anos de 1940 e 1960. O período entre o fim da Segunda Guerra Mundial e da ditadura do Estado Novo e o início da ditadura militar marca um intervalo democrático na história brasileira, no qual a ampliação e a modernização do parque industrial foram incentivadas pelo Estado, inicialmente por Getúlio Vargas, com a implantação de indústrias de base, e, posteriormente, por Juscelino Kubitschek, que, com o Plano de Metas, criou os mecanismos para a instalação das multinacionais no país. Concentrado em sua maior parte na região Sudeste, para onde convergiu a migração interna, o capital industrial proporcionou o intenso processo de metropolização da cidade de São Paulo, cenário onipresente na fotografia de Flieg. Contratado por importantes indústrias à época, o fotógrafo criou fotorreportagens em que documentou as instalações, o trabalho e a produção industrial. Paralelamente, sua atuação na publicidade o levou a registrar o crescimento da capital paulista, marcado pela verticalização das edificações, pela modernização do mercado de bens de consumo, com a inserção de inúmeros produtos industrializados voltados à classe média, pelo incremento do circuito cultural e artístico e por mudanças nos hábitos domésticos e na sociabilidade urbana. Nesta dissertação, cujo embasamento teórico é a cultura visual e os estudos de fotografia e história, a prática fotográfica de Flieg é analisada, bem como os procedimentos formais que aproximam sua representação do campo artístico e têm como referência a fotografia moderna europeia e norte-americana. Abordamos ainda a relevância de sua obra para o estudo da cultura material contemporânea e para a documentação visual da industrialização brasileira na metade do século XX. A pesquisa investiga os conteúdos das fotografias urbanas e industriais de Flieg, os contextos de sua produção, a circulação social na época de sua criação e os diferentes circuitos que delas se apropriaram ao longo do tempo.

This dissertation is about the photographic representation of the city and industry by the German photographer naturalized Brazilian Hans Günter Flieg between the years 1940 and 1960. The period between the end of World War II and the dictatorship of the Estado Novo and the beginning of the military dictatorship marks a democratic interval in Brazilian history, in which the expansion and modernization of the industrial park was encouraged by the State, initially by Getúlio Vargas, with the implementation of heavy industries, and later by Juscelino Kubitschek, who, with the Plano de Metas [Plan of Goals], created the mechanisms for the installation of multinationals in the country. Concentrated mostly in the Southeast region, where internal migration converged, the industrial capital provided the intense process of metropolization of the city of São Paulo, an ubiquitous scenario in Flieg's photography. Hired by important industries at the time, the photographer created photo-reportages in which he documented the installations, work and industrial production. At the same time, his performance in advertising led him to register the growth of São Paulo's capital, marked by verticalization of buildings, the modernization of the consumer goods market, with the insertion of countless industrialized products aimed at the middle class, the increase of the cultural and artistic circuit and changes in domestic habits and urban sociability. In this dissertation, whose theoretical basis is visual culture and studies of photography and history, Flieg's photographic practice is analyzed, as well as the formal procedures that bring his representation closer to the artistic field and have as reference modern European and North American photography. We also address the relevance of his work for the study of contemporary material culture and for the visual documentation of Brazilian industrialization in the mid-20th century. The research investigates the contents of Flieg's urban and industrial photographs, the contexts of their production, the social circulation at the time of their creation and the different circuits that have appropriated them over time.
