A contribuição da expansão da produção agrícola para o desmatamento no cerrado do oeste da Bahia

Abstract

O setor agropecuário tem sido colocado como responsável pelo desmatamento da região do Oeste da Bahia nos últimos anos devido à abertura de novas áreas de produção agrícola, porém existem estudos que se colocam contra essa hipótese e argumentam que o crescimento do setor nas últimas duas décadas se deve ao uso intensivo de tecnologia de produção, que permitiu ganhos de eficiência e aumento da produção, sem necessariamente estar atrelado a mais desmatamentos. Com o objetivo de contribuir para esse debate, o presente trabalho faz uma análise do impacto do crescimento da produção agropecuária no Oeste da Bahia a partir de dados a nível municipal de áreas desmatadas, produção agropecuária e outras variáveis. Foi realizada a regressão linear múltipla a partir dos dados para tentar modelar o desmatamento no período de 2001 a 2019. Os resultados do trabalho mostraram que culturas de larga escala como a soja e o algodão estão negativamente correlacionadas com o aumento do desmatamento, o que sugere que o aumento da produção dessas culturas atenuou o desmatamento da região. Outra variável que se mostrou negativamente correlacionada ao desmatamento foi o PIB municipal indicando que o crescimento da economia do município contribuiu para uma diminuição do desmatamento. O melhor entendimento dos “drivers” do desmatamento da região poderá contribuir para o desenho de novas políticas públicas de incentivo a agricultura sustentável e com menor impacto ambiental.

The agricultural sector was hold responsible for the deforestation of western Bahia in recent years due to the opening of new areas for agricultural production, however there are studies that are against this hypothesis and argue that the growth of the sector in the last two decades is due to the intensive usage of technology in production farms, which can increase efficiency and maximize output, without the need for more deforestation. In order to contribute to this debate, the present study analyzes the impact of agricultural production in western Bahia based on data at the municipal level of deforested areas, agricultural production and other variables. A multiple linear regression was performed from the data to try to model deforestation from 2001 to 2019. The results of the study show that large-scale crops such as soybean and cotton are negatively correlated with the increase in deforestation, suggesting that these crops actually helped to lessen the deforestation. Another variable that showed up as negative correlated to deforestation was the municipal GDP, indicating that the growth of the municipality's economy contributed to a decrease in deforestation. A better understanding of the drivers of deforestation in the region can contribute to the design of new public policies to encourage sustainable agriculture with less environmental impact.
