Abstract

A translog production function is fitted to farm census (1970-75) data by new ridge regression procedures. The results indicate that: (a) CD, CES and Leontief specifications would be rejected as appropriate representations of farm technology; (b) constant returns to scale are indicated for average size farms, and increasing returns to scale for large size farms; (c) there is not enough evidence to reject the usual hypothesis of unitary elasticity of substitution between labor and capital. Other elasticities of substitution are also high and positive. Implications for farm policy are drawn on those results.
