A conquista do espaço: sertão e fronteira no pensamento brasileiro

Abstract

The conquest of territorial space has played an imp ortant role in the construction of a national identity in Brazil. The article discusses the different meanings that have been assigned to the term sertão within Brazilian social thought, using Euclides da Cunhas work as a reference point. It explores some reflections of the myth of the backlands found in the notion of frontier and in the conquest of new territorial space as a product of the bandeirante movement. Lastly, it analyzes the question of recapturing the image of the bandeirante as a mythical force that can organize the symbolic world of Brazilians in general and Paulistas in particular.

O artigo procura mostrar a importância da conquista do espaço territorial na construção da identidade nacional. Discute os diferentes significados que a palavra 'sertão' tem assumido no pensamento social brasileiro tomando como marco a obra de Euclides da Cunha. Explora um dos desdobramentos do mito do sertão presente na noção de fronteira e na conquista de novos espaços territoriais decorrente do movimento das bandeiras. Analisa a recuperação da imagem do bandeirante em sua função mítica capaz de organizar o mundo simbólico dos brasileiros em geral e dos paulistas em particular.
