Cantar é mais do que lembrar: memórias e autoconstrução intelectual de Caetano Veloso em Verdade Tropical

Abstract

Essa dissertação é um estudo sobre o livro Verdade tropical (1997), o relato de memória de Caetano Veloso. Meu objetivo é entender o que é esse livro e como ele explica a formação e os posicionamentos de Caetano, além de ser influenciado e influenciar sua produção musical. Visando compreender os mecanismos de elaboração dessa obra utilizei reportagens, discos, filmes e análises teóricas que servem para compreender a análise de Caetano sobre os processos culturais brasileiros na segunda metade do século XX. Também busco entender a construção desse lugar de Caetano como um (autointitulado) “pop star intelectual” que combina sua carreira de músico popular com a de um intelectual público chamado a falar sobre os rumos políticos-culturais do país, sempre tendo a música popular brasileira como sua referência principal de interpretação e força de transformação social do Brasil.

This dissertation is a study about the book Tropical truth (1997), the memory report of Caetano Veloso. My goal is to understand what this book is and how it explains the early years of Caetano and some political-cultural positions he has taken over the years. I believe the book was influenced by his musical production and, after the publication, the book influenced his songs/albums. In order to understand the mechanisms for the elaboration of the book, I used newspaper articles, albums, films and theoretical analyzes that serve to understand Caetano's analysis of Brazilian cultural processes in the second half of the twentieth century. I also try to understand the construction of this place of Caetano as a (self-titled) “intellectual pop star" that combines his career as a popular musician and as a public intellectual, constantly called to talk about the political-cultural directions of the country, always having Brazilian popular music as his main reference of interpretation and force of social transformation of Brazil.
