Convergência entre a renda per-capita dos estados brasileiros

Abstract

This paper aims to investigate if per capita income of the Brazilian states are converging, so that inequality among them are declining, and also to estimate the speed of convergence. The methodology follows Barro and Sala-i-Martin (1992b). Our estimates confirm the hypothesis of convergence for the Brazilian states, either using the concept of B convergence (the existence of an inverse relationship between initial per capíta income and growth rate) or o convergence (the decline over time of the dispersion of per capita income). However, the speed of convergence estimated is considerably smaller than estimates for the U.S. states and European regions.

Este trabalho busca verificar a existência de convergência entre a renda percapita dos estados brasileiros bem como calcular a velocidade em que este processo ocorre. Para isto utilizamos dados da FIBGE e estimativas próprias dos PIB estaduais. A metodologia de estimação segue Barro e Sala-i-Martin (1992b) que estudam a velocidade de convergência dos estados americanos. Nossos resultados confirmam a hipótese de convergência para o Brasil mas esta se dá de forma bem mais lenta que a estimada para os estados americanos. Adicionalmente o trabalho estabelece condições teóricas precisas para relacionar B-convergência (existência de relação inversa entre PIB inicial e taxa de crescimento) e O-convergência (queda da variância entre os PIB's dos estados).
