The relationship between management practices, competitiveness and performance is a topic of great interest among scholars in the fields of strategy, operations management, people management and organizational studies. This research examined the use of management practices in small and medium size manufacturing companies in Brazil. It was developed from a research model developed by Bloom and Van Reenen (2007), that was already applied in several countries. A semi-structured questionnaire was used in telephone interviews with operation managers from a sample of companies selected after statistical criteria. This research contributes for management practice and theory. Concerning management practice, this research identifies differences between Brazilian companies and companies from developed countries, indicating tracks for improvement of management practices. Concerning management theory, this research presents the implementation in Brazil of a combined methodology of inquiry, one that blends qualitative and quantitative methods. In addition, the work created a database for future research on the relationship between management practices and performance.
