Since they emerged, favelas in Rio de Janeiro have been, over the years, the focus of various public policies developed by governments. First, the emphasis of these policies was based on the issue of removal of the favelas, because they were regarded as true aberrations that needed to be eradicated. Over the years we can notice a big change. The speech for more urbanization projects in favelas seems to gain strength and the removals of them seems to lose strength. However, since the year 2009, we see that the public agenda is giving great emphasis to the promotion of entrepreneurship in the favelas, as this is seen as an important factor in generating wealth and fighting poverty. For this, different projects were created by the government and by the private sector to encourage entrepreneurship in favelas. However, as will be explained through some interviews that were conducted with some entrepreneurs that live in the Cantagalo Slum, these projects present some barriers and challenges that must be overcome so that they can serve the purpose for which they were created and to be more effective.
