This works aims to present an integrated analysis of the determinants of innovation capacity. To date, there are no empirical studies that present a comprehensive model on a large-scale database showing the main routes to develop an innovation capability. Based on a comprehensive and systematic literature review, a theoretical model was built by integrating the main factors suggested in theoretical and reviewed articles. A range of reliable measurements were developed and the model empirically tested on a sample of 243 Brazilian firms from various industries. The methods used include confirmatory factor analysis, structural equations modeling and multigroup analysis of structural invariance. The results showed the direct effect of customer and market knowledge as well as the strategic management of technology on innovation performance. Both factors are affected by the strategic intent to innovate and by the transformation leadership through people management to innovate. The organizational structure organicity and project management have a positive moderating effect on the relationship between the strategic management of technology and innovation performance, however they produced unexpected and complex results regarding the relationship between the customer and market knowledge and innovation performance, which are explained post-hoc. This study’s value is in the presentation of a reliable measurement scale and a theoretical empirically validated model that integrates multiple study lines and explains how leadership action can structure and leverage the managerial resources to generate and maintain the organization's ability to innovate. The model forms a road-map to help managers develop strategies and practices to leverage innovation performance.
